In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
